The maner of levying an Army, within ... England, with everie office ... and the dutie that perteineth to them severallie [manuscript], 1588?

The author's late dear lord, Edward, earl of Rutland, had requested him to take in hand the notes that he had made while serving in different capacities in the army and that he, when Captain of Roxburgh in Scotland, had given to Sir Oswell Wolsthorpe. As the author had also served at sea, he was including a similar discussion of the navy (leaf 49). He was concerned that because of the long peace, men were growing ignorant of military matters.
